Theodoor Colenbrander Carpet Runner for sale
For sale from private collection -
Original Theodoor Colenbrander "Artisjok Design" Stair Carpet Runner with Flower - Life motif.
Made at KTV, Amersfoort, Netherlands circa 1900 to 1925.
I bought this antique runner in Rotterdam April 1991 and have had it in use at home.
It consists of two sections -
265 cm x 113 cm x 3cm
585 cm x 113 cm x 3cm Total 8.5 meters.
Both sections are clean, no stains and not faded. The foundation structure is very good and solid.
The long section has one end finished with hessian the other end is frayed ( Temporarily stitched ).
On the shorter section the pile is more worn down, both ends are frayed ( Temporarily stitched ).
There is wear consistent with it being used on a staircase and furrows from the metal stair- rods.
The pile is 2 cm thick where it has been stepped on and not worn at all between the steps - 3 cm thick.
Some small patches of historic moth damage to the pile only.
I painfully found old style iron nails in the runner indicating it was placed on a wooden staircase.
Fibers taken from the frayed ends could be used for repairs. It has Smyrna knots.
The two sections could be joined together and the pile trimmed for an even thickness.
Or it could be cut up and made into rugs.
However, I have it on good authority from Richard Mills and Arno Weltans that it is a very rare runner and
the only known example of a Colenbrander Artisjok Runner.
I am no expert with carpet repair and although I have stitched the frayed ends I have kept it original.
The runner is included in Richard Mills new 2018 book - Designing to the Grid -
T.A.C.Colenbrander as Carpet Designer - History, Analyses, Designs and Carpets.
See the runner in "Attributed Designs" on page 169. I am also acknowledged on page 177.
This excellent and most interesting book can be previewed and ordered here - http://colenbrandercarpets.com
Soon after I contacted him Richard Mills kindly sent me an email with an initial analysis of the runner and you can read it here - Colenbrander Runner Analysis.
